Evaluation and Treatment of Temporomandibular Disorders

DESCRIPTION
Functional limitations involving chewing, talking and yawning are often caused by involvement of the temporomandibular joint and muscles of mastication. An overview of clinical anatomy of the TMJ will precede a discussion of common disorders of the TMJ and masticatory muscles. An evidence based physical examination to diagnose temporomandibular and masticatory muscle disorders will be discussed and practiced in lab. The non-surgical management by the physical therapist for temporomandibular disorders will be reviewed. The rationale and the assessment of oral appliances fabricated by the dentist will be highlighted. Indications for arthrocentesis, arthroscopy, and arthrotomy for disc displacements will be discussed followed by post surgical physical therapy management. Marketing ideas to the dental profession will be highlighted thru out the course.
